I  guess we were what you would consider us a typical American Family.  Mom, Dad, two children, two dogs and the occasional cat.  Mom and dad work hard to purchase a bigger house, kids doing there best to earn an honor student bumper sticker to put on one of the three cars.  We would spend our early evenings during the week going to and from one or both of the kids after school sports programs.  Later in the day its time to eat, do homework,  and make sure each child logs some reading so they are not left behind. At the end of the day we are exhausted and worried that we will not be able to do it all over again the next day (but do).  Our weekend is spent with the kids at another one of their sports programs and trying to manage what was not done during the week at work and home so we can reset for the next week.   To many that would sound like we were living the Dream*.

 

*The American Dream

A phrase connoting hope for prosperity and happiness, symbolized particularly by having a house of one's own. Possibly applied at first to the hopes of immigrants, the phrase now applies to all except the very rich and suggests a confident hope that one's children's economic and social condition will be better than one's own.

 

While we were doing our level best to achieve more prosperity and happiness we just could not find the right book that unlocked the secrets to the dream.  We purchased all the right time saving devices, bought a larger house worked harder at our jobs still nothing looked to be getting better.

 

Today we are not you average family. We live in the mobile confines of a 350 square foot fifth wheel trailer.  Our backyard changes on a regular basis.  We still work but not for the same reasons.  Our kids are educated at home and our time together is not scheduled.  Things are slowing down for us as we settle into this lifestyle. Hopefully we stay out of the ruts of our past and discover more about each other as a family as we explore America.
